Linguistics Olympiad 2024

DOL 2024 Final Round

The final round of the DOL took place from May 9-11 at the ZAS in Berlin. It was attended by 19 students from various German states who had successfully qualified after the 2nd round. The event was organized by Nathalie Topaj and André Meinunger (ZAS Berlin) and accompanied by them together with Louis Cho, a member of the DOL jury, and Merlin Fischer, a member of the Rätsel-AG. A jury determined the results of the German Linguistics Olympiad.

The winner is Leonard Kottisch from Lower Saxony, with 88.5 points out of a possible 99 points. Leonard also qualified for the International Math Olympiad - congratulations! Lennart Zenker took 2nd place, just one point behind. Daniel Pahi came third with 76.25 points.

The 8 best qualified to take part in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) 2024 in Brazil - this year, two teams will represent Germany. However, Konrad Jannes Köhler will take part in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which takes place at the same time as the IOL. Philipp Lörcks will take his place in the national team at the IOL. We wish Leonard Kottisch, Lennart Zenkert, Dániel Páhi, Stella Heinzelmann, Tara-Yasmin Heil, Eva Lotte Lindner, Mikhail Iomdin and Philipp Lörcks lots of fun and success at the IOL in Brazil!

The final round of the DOL was financially supported by the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft. Prizes were donated by the Leibniz Association and the publisher Language Science Press.

Results of the 1st round

The 1st round of the DOL 2024 took place from February 15 to 29. There were over 200 entries this year. 148 students from 13 federal states took part in the 1st round of the German Linguistics Olympiad and handed in their solutions. Berlin led the way in terms of the number of participants by federal state, followed by Saxony-Anhalt.

The tasks were not easy, but many participants were great and solved almost everything. Out of a possible 106 points, they needed at least 95 to qualify for the 2nd round. Two participants came very close to the full score with an excellent 105.5 points. A total of 62 participants made it through - congratulations and good luck in the 2nd round!

We hope that even those who did not advance had fun participating and continue to enjoy languages and linguistics. Next year there will be another opportunity to participate in the Linguistics Olympiad!
